Speaking of Philadelphia and messed up rape laws - did you see the CityPaper group of articles on sexual harassment and rape? It described why Pennsylvania laws give more legal advantages to rapists than survivors!

My name is Colby Gabel and I am a student at North Carolina State University. I am involved in a student organization called The Movement which advocates for sexual and interpersonal violence. As a student on campus, I feel like it’s extremely important for officials to take every report seriously not matter how major or minor the issue may be. As a victim of dating violence, I am very appreciative to the NCSU campus police for taking my situation very seriously and helping me tremendously. If campus police had not taken my situation as seriously, I could still be in a lot of danger. I strongly support investigations around college campuses to ensure that campus authorities are doing their job correctly. In addition, I would like to hear about these investigations in the media to make sure they are being performed correctly. I think hearing about these investigations first hand will comfort college students and encourage them to report every incident.

Yes! Thank you. I agree that education never taught me what to think-- I've always been in the driver's seat and for a long time I was resistant to the conclusions that social reality led to or skeptical of those realities until I personally experienced them or listened to some people of other colors, genders, and sexualities than I at one time even knew existed. I have learned how to think. My older brother who has resisted institutional education since middle school is extremely critical of university life in which he has only participated to a very limited extent if at all. When he attempts to trivialize others' points of view by labeling them as liberal indoctrination I have to grit my teeth. While he falls in line with what our parents and the military have put in his head, I'm the one who was "indoctrinated" by my education. The reality is that there are many points to be made about any issue on any side (and there aren't even just two sides!) what I had to realize is that the simplistic model I grew up with doesn't work as well as one would hope with the social realities I and others have experienced.

I'm from the middle east, and being raised in a male dominated society like mine, gives females the impression that women embracing sexuality is considered as a sin by religion and morality. However men do as they please and are encouraged by society. Fathers deny their daughters freedom and approve of their sons actions whatever they may be. Being an open minded individual, in my opinion I believe these religion-related reasons for female sexuality deprivation are nothing but nonsense and ways for men to control society without female interferance.

The problem here, as with most mainstream coverage of sexual assault, is that the question of why rape occurs is answered by looking at the woman's behaviour. She was drunk; she wasn't dressed properly; she was alone; she was out at night. The thing is, plenty of women are simultaneously all of these things every day, and they aren't victims of sexual assault. The difference isn't in the behaviour of the women -- the difference is that there is a man around who sees a girl who is completely hammered and thinks that she's an appropriate sexual conquest.

First, I never implied that Brunswick - or Maine - was filled with 'hicks.' I was just pointing out the difference in size compared to what I, having lived by cities all my life, am used to, albeit in a humorous way. Second, if you read the following lines, I discuss how Mainers have been extremely courteous and how much I enjoy going to school there. I didn't paint Maine - or Brunswick - residents as 'hicks,' and I'm sorry if you read it that way.

Correction: Brunswick's population is roughly 15,000. And for a state with 1.3 million people, that's actually a pretty significant "city" even if it's officially known as a town. We know that Maine's not a bustling metropolis and most of us recognize that that can be a positive. But most of us resent the implication that we're all hicks who don't get city life...when we do have a lot going for our population size and rural atmosphere.

Just because there is a statistical relationship between being drunk and sexual assault doesn't excuse any acts perpetrated on women.

I've just written a blog about a case in Melbourne, Australia where judges have quashed the conviction of a man who raped a drunk woman. The law is an ass - Rape is rape.
